People often ask why a Rotating Yoke and why a handle moving sideways? Its all to do with the flight zone.... Why on earth did engineers design headbails with handles placed next to the headbail with cattle having to move towards the operator? Every stock handling person knows that this is asking for trouble, yet many companies still make them and many farmers still buy them. However, there is a better way... the Rotating Yoke way. The Rotating yoke was designed with cattle instincts in mind. Cattle will move by themselves as long as you create an environment in which they feel happy. So if you stand in front of the point of balance (shown below) you are fighting them all the way. Stand behind the point of balance (where the Rotating Yoke sideways moving handle is placed) and you are working with the animal. With the Necklamp this headbail is unbeatable.

Mechanical Locking - Kwiklock™ The Kwiklock ram is a patented locking system which works by positioning several hardened steel plates onto a shaft, a plunger locks which the plates in place. The system is instant in its locking and can be used in any position (flat or upright). This mechanical locking ram is used on all squeeze systems and where air rams are used to action the head bail. The system allows for infinite locking. In situ the system is always locked, a plunger releases the system via the operating handle, ezy! ™
Passive Lock - Hydralock® Midranger, Beefmaster Classic The Hydralock® was developed to eliminate noise and to create a very reliable fast locking system The locking is actioned by moving oil between two compartments which are separated by a checker valve. TechniPharm does not use ratchet locking systems, which are often found on all alternative designs. Ratchet systems can be very noisy and tend to upset the stock. Creating unnecessary stress.
Conventional headbails have a limited head/personal access (180 -210 degrees at best) which inhibits the ability for the operator to do jobs on the head, for example EID tagging where good access is required. The Highflow260™ has 260 plus degrees animal head access Animal flow and willingness to move into a headbail is all to do with the animal feeling safe and comfortable, the more directional flow “working with the animals directional movement” means better flow and better draw. The HighFlow260™ has directional flow which moves with animal flow To catch the animal, particularly flighty animals a fast reaction time between open and shut is required, the yokes V slide movement provide for this. The HighFlow260™ - uniquely designed “wedged” V doors fast slide movement provide for fast animal catchment. The doors move with the direction of animal movement The HighFlow260™ - Better Head/neck position catchment (not catching animals on shoulders) Operators can see what is happing to the animal in order to catch it. Head position is critical for the ability to work on the animals head, but also to encourage the animal to stand up. An animal with its head up very seldom falls to its knees. The HighFlow260™ has a pointed V door design like an arrow which gives more accurate catching ability for the operator and a more natural force on the neck. Yoke force on the neck determines holding ability. The “looser the grip” the more the animal moves.. (force beyond 200KG can kill the animal). In many headbails mechanical delivery of force is through the top of the structure, this means energy is lost in the centre of the yoke where we actually need the force. The HighFlow260™ - Headbail Centrelock™ mechanism loads the two opposing doors in the centre of the doors (not top) delivering maximum pressure the animal’s neck so force impact is focused in the center where the neck needs it. The HighFlow260™- Headbail is fully sheeted and the yokes run on a solidtrack providing for a solid hold both top and bottom with all locking energy delivered to the centre where closest to the neck. Legs often get in the way by the animal moving forward, and poke legs through any gaps which may exist. This allows the animal to move more than what is desirable. The Rotating Yoke™ Headbail works on a patented principle of rotating yokes - linkages are replaced by a semi-rotating sprocket like plate. This ensures a very strong and positive movement of the two yokes together. The second unique concept is the horizontally operating mechanism, which is attached directly to the rotating yokes. The direct attachment of the active hydraulic ram and yoke means there is no free play and a direct control between handle and yoke movement. This translates into optimum pressure to yoke energy conversion (clamping pressure). You will also benefit from no longer having to heave or hang on to ‘up and down’ handles in order to lock the headbail. The active hydraulics operating means anyone of any height can move the handle backwards or forwards. No more sore shoulders or tennis-elbow pains! Finally, the Hydraulics allow positive and silent, opening or closing. No longer do you have to put up with the clanging and banging of ratchets and handles or hard work, we make farming ezy.
The round “moon shape” design means the animal is placed further forward and is free of any front barrier construction giving you room & access to work the head. The full size, heavy duty concertina headbail with double yoke, rubber lining and neck extenders is a true award winning Cattle Handler Headbail. The Rotating Yoke Cattle Handler Headbail™ can be operated by one handle from the front or rear end of the Handler, no ropes or pulleys here! The locking of the unit is such that wherever you leave the handle’s position the Handler locks, no danger of animals flying through or kick back in handles. And there is NO NOISE! It’s all so simple and yet sophisticated. The patented handle on this unit is placed vertically. This means you and any one else - tall, short, male or female can work this unit. You can also customize your handler by requesting it to be equipped with a Cattle Pro MIDRANGER, full or medium sized concertina headbail instead of the Rotating Yoke headbail that comes standard on your handler. Hydraulic operation is an additional option and makes these units even better. Technipharm Headbails have won a combined total of 11 awards for design and performance!
The specially designed rubber lined yoke ensures locking of the head and restricts up and down movement the yoke shape and the use of rubber profile is vital to making this system work . In our research we monitored many cattle large and small to find the optimum design. (Also see Necklamp™)
The unique patented neck extenders ensure the head is brought further forward and gives plenty of access for dehorning, tagging, pink eye treatment, compudosing and all those other head jobs. Its the only way you will have full access!. The moon shape of the headbail greatly improves access from all sides and allows full elbow room, a feature lacking in alternative products. The unique aspects of the TechniPharm Handler Headbail allows full head control without additional items or horizontal head locks. This means full operational features and safety remains at all times in the hands of the operator by use of just one handle (no walking back and forwards to operate the same). Operator and animal safety as well as handling speed is optimum.
A very handy and patented feature on the Handler and Headbail is an INJECTAGATE. This is placed directly behind the headbail and allows side access to the top half of the neck for injection purposes. The use of this INJECTAGATE is recommended as the only safe and proper access for injecting. Injections in any other body part will increase arm access danger and may also increase the damage to the more valuable meat parts of the animal. The Rotating Yoke Headbail is the only headbail on the market which has an injecta gate built in the headbail adding value to your purchase and adding value to your work output and safety.
All side gates are full size or split. If split they may be locked by pins to a full gate. They are hinged from the front. Why should they be hinged from the front (rear opening)? Because the camlatch to open the side gate is at the rear of the unit where the operator mostly operates the handler from. By having the gate opening camlatches close to the operator at the rear of the handler, you can open the side gates from one position (no need to walk). Also front opening handlers can pose a real risk of having the gate forced back onto the operator as the animal exits. Additional benefits of front hinging is that calves can be let into the handler from the operator side straight towards the udder- the operator can fully immobilize the cow with the headbail & squeeze (double or single sided on), allowing the operator to do the job in safety, with minimal stress on the cow and her calf. You can however ask for us to change the gate hinging to suit your requirements. (see work sheets)

The top side gates have a full length run-up system built in. This run-up system can be straight or downward sloping. The run-up system is designed to back-lock an animal. The downward sloping curve in the run-up system follows the height of young animals and brings the pipe right under the tail. This unique feature enhances handling of younger animals like bull calves as they can now be fully controlled from the back for scrotum measurement or castrating. Mothering calves is now a breeze. The unique design of having this in the top gate means you have full access to the animal where it counts. Think about it, there is no point in having a back up system in a bottom gate as you will never be able to open it. It took TechniPharm to change this “every body always done this” mind set.
A good parallel squeeze is vital for optimum control and restriction, many farmers initially underestimate this feature. The benefits of a double-sided squeeze are a full reduction of width of the unit, proper positioning of the animals and full control for jobs such as pregnancy testing, A.I, but also when weighing calves or heifers it avoids it being able to turn around. An animal with its head in a Cattle Handler Headbail and being squeezed is completely immobilized, allowing you to do whatever needs doing in full safety while keeping animal stress levels to a minimum. The TechniPharm Handler squeeze is operated by one handle and locked by a Hydralock ram, easy and fast operation and an instant noise free effortless lock. All gates can be split top and bottom and can also be equipped with drop down gates for maximum access to any of the flank and back. (Handy for continued pour-ons, branding or backfat scanning). Locking of the squeeze is by means of one handle lock or release although as an alternative hydraulic operation is also possible.
The Vet Section is designed for full and safe access. The gates are swung from the front, this is unique to TechniPharm Handlers. Imported and units by alternative companies have opposite swinging gates and this is not really thought through and/or deemed suitable for NZ handling situations. The TechniPharm Handler allows the vet or A.I person to “step” in the vet section ready to enter the rear area of the cow and step back, knowing a quick and easy access is there at all times. The special VET SAFETY gate which closes behind the cow means an animal can not kick back and in the event an animal does go down it allows a vets arm to escape safely, rather than being squashed between gate and animal. (Note under OSH you could be liable if this did occur). The gate configuration with the Rotating Yoke Headbail Handle is the very best in fast action and safety as it provides for a truly ergonomic sequence of opening and closing gates. REAR DOOR - Not all Handlers have Split doors The rear door (double sliding like an elevator door) of the Cattle Handler has 2 nylon rollers per door for optimum effortless rolling and an automatic lock system which means that the person entering the handler knows that the next animal can not open or jump the gate. Why split doors? It means you only have to pull and shut 400 mm which is convenient arm movement, but above all it means a very effective way to stop the next animal from pushing its way into the handler, a real bonus when you are weighing. The extra height of the Handlers also means there is no way an animal will jump out (or in) and a person does not have to bend down to enter. Front operation of this door is a real valuable option and allows you to let animals in while working from the front of the Handler
To accommodate weighing a floor is vital. The floor can either be expanded mesh ( special type) checker plate, fibre grate or rubber lined steel. Rubber lined floors offer a skid free, noise free environment and are recommended.
All Handlers are standard equipped with mounting-lugs. Multilugs are optional and fit all common brands of weigh bars.
Straight out of the Cattle Handler or Headbail, drafting is now a piece of cake with a specific multi purpose CATTLE HANDLER 3 WAY DRAFTER. This unit has small self closing access gates which allows a person access to the HEADBAIL while at the same time preventing the animal from walking through. The drafting gates are operated either manually or by air or Hydraulics, the latter meaning full handling from any position via remote or joy stick control. Fully Rubber block silenced so that there is no noise present when gates are closing. Full EID autodrafting is also a possibility. • PIPE OVER PIPE HINGING Pipe over pipe hinging is an expensive way in which to hang gates, however it is the only way to ensure there is no sagging and the only way in which the gates and squeeze will function well and up to standard. Safety in knowing a gate will never come off its hinges is also an issue. The flange on top and bottom end of the pipe over pipe construction means no seizing will ever occur. Grease points everywhere for lubrication. • ROUND PIPE CONSTRUCTION Round pipe is harder to work with than square box section, much more time and skill is involved in using this material, however round pipe means significantly reduced bruising and much more safety for operators. It’s also much stronger and is less subject to corrosion. The issue here again is not to save on a few dollars but to focus on quality and safety. • HEAVY UPRIGHTS All uprights are made of heavy grade steel, this ensures extra strength in the frame construction which will ensure the unit will not come apart due to fatigue. • SQUEEZE CONSTRUCTION A single or double sided squeeze needs proper support in order to function well and bear the strain. The TechniPharm Handlers have a main frame which provides ample support ( It is vital that the main frame holding the squeeze mechanism is 1/3 wider than the squeeze mechanism itself). Again the whole system is pipe over pipe and equipped with lubrication holes ensuring an easy and simple way to keep everything moving smooth and safe. The squeeze is locked via a kwiklock system and is one handle operation, no pulleys, ropes or heavy lift up handles or ratchets • LUBRICATION POINTS As mentioned, the Handler is equipped with lubrication points, this is done to ensure the best and smoothest operation and reduce wear on moving parts. The choice of grease holes as opposed to grease nipples is one of long-term durability and function. Dung and urine can play havoc with grease nipples and once they do not function anymore, yes you know it, the job simply gets put aside. Grease holes will always stay open and are accessible at any time. Regular greasing will keep your unit like new. • MAIN FRAME CONSTRUCTION The main frame is the key to total strength. TechniPharm Handlers have the strongest, heaviest construction around, full corner supports and fully enclosed ends means this frame will stand up to between 20 and 30 ton bending strain. Our frames are Pre Stressed which means after thousands of Cattle and years of use the frame will be as straight and strong as it was when delivered. Zinc content and is baked into the steel. Straight after this coating the final Industrial Grade Powder coating finish is applied, the top coat is applied while the unit is still hot which means full and optimal adhesion is achieved. The two coats are than ‘baked’ simultaneously which ensures optimum adhesion to the sandblasted surface. This whole process is an ISO standard supported by Dulux - leaders in industrial coatings. The method is tested to give longer wearing abilities than galvanizing. The total coat thickness is 10 times thicker than paint and 3 times thicker than galvanizing! This is an optional extra. • HOT DIP GALVANIZING This is a well known coating which is used on many steel products, what many people do not know is that galvanizing is a wearable coating which reacts with the environment and gets thinner as years go by.
